The Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine Research Laboratory at the University of Missouri – Columbia, conducts research that intersects medicine, surgery, neuroscience and anesthesiology.

Our lab seeks to advance perioperative and pain medicine through translational research that bridges basic science, clinical investigation, and patient care. We focus on uncovering mechanisms that shape anesthetic response and recovery, with the goal of improving patient outcomes and training the next generation of physician-scientists.

Our Research

  • A double-blind, randomized, parallel group study to compare rocuronium reversal with sugammadex (Bridion®) versus neostigmine/glycopyrrolate and the incidence of urinary retention after elective ambulatory posterior lumbar spine surgery.
Principal Investigator: Julie Marshall, MD, FASA // Clinicaltrials.gov registration number: NCT05887375

  • No DIET Trial: Dogmatic Interruption of Enteral nutrition.
Principal Investigator: Jeffrey Coughenour, MD & Patrick Ward, DO // Clinicaltrials.gov registration number: NCT06431048

  • Establishing optimal PEEP setting for obese patients in the steep Trendelenburg position: a pilot study.
Principal Investigator: Tinashe Maduke, MD // Clinicaltrials.gov registration number: NCT06518239

  • The effect of preoperative intravenous fluid bolus on post-induction hypotension in elective cystoscopies.
Principal investigator: Sagar Bansal, MD // Clincaltrials.gov registration number: NCT06985654

Why join our lab?

We have researchers and physicians committed to mentoring individuals in advanced techniques in translational clinical-research. You will have the opportunity to assist with retrospective reviews, clinical and/or observational studies, funding applications, publication-preparation, and development of new studies to ensure that you become a well-rounded researcher/physician scientist.
