Neel Thakkar, MD on a medical mission to India

My decision to join the Peedh Parai international mission trip was influenced by my Indian roots and ability to communicate in the local language. We were accompanied by Dr. Gupta, who has been involved in this mission for many years.

Performing pediatric orthopedic surgery in a resource-limited setting was a humbling experience that deepened my appreciation for the resources available in the U.S. We treated children with severe deformities, including untreated clubfoot, hip dysplasia, and congenital knee conditions—many of whom had no access to healthcare and limited financial means. One child with a congenital knee hyperextension deformity had never bent her knee; after surgery, she was able to sit, squat, and walk independently.

Working with a single instrument tray and limited sutures taught us to be resourceful and deliberate in every step of care. The experience was deeply fulfilling, as we provided life-changing treatment without expectation of return. I also valued reconnecting with my cultural roots—enjoying authentic Indian food, watching cricket matches, and cheering for India—while collaborating with healthcare providers from around the world, which reinforced the importance of service, efficiency, and global collaboration in medicine.
