Dr. Anglen with a group of pediatric ward patients in 1988.

Dr. Jeffrey Anglen was a Mizzou faculty member from 1992 to 2004. Before his time at MU, he traveled to Transkei, South Africa as part of the Orthopaedics Overseas organization.

He spent six weeks with the only trained and certified orthopaedic surgeon for the 3.5 million inhabitants of Transkei and treated conditions he had not seen in his residency, including tuberculosis of the joints and spine, leprosy, untreated polio, and neglected fractures and infections. He describes that “every day was a learning experience. It was fascinating, invigorating, stimulating, and humbling. I loved it.”

Dr. Anglen returned to Africa in 2007 and 2009 where he spent time in Eldoret, Kenya at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. In 2007, he worked with and learned from the other physicians at the hospital. He remembers “we would drive into town beforehand, personally buy the plates and screws we would use at the medical supply store, take them back to the hospital and sterilize them.” During his trip, Anglen helped with the first acetabular fracture fixation at the hospital. In 2009, one of Dr. Anglen’s residents joined him for the trip and together they helped the hospital setup their own residency program.
