School of Medicine Class of 2026 match results revealed

Class of 2026 match day

The University of Missouri School of Medicine’s class of 2026 took a major step toward their futures as physicians on Friday, March 20, when they discovered where they will complete training in their chosen specialties as resident physicians.

“Match Day” is a milestone celebrated nationwide. It marks the occasion where medical students open an envelope that contains their residency match and reveals where they will spend the next chapter of their medical journey.

For Mizzou’s class of 2026, the results are impressive. 99.2% of the class received a residency program match, exceeding this year’s U.S. MD match rate of 93%.

In the Mizzou School of Medicine’s class of 2026, 21% will stay on the Mizzou campus for their residency training, 42% will remain in Missouri and 44% selected residency programs in primary care fields.

In this year’s graduating class, 22 students were assigned to Mizzou’s Springfield Clinical Campus for their last two years. The Springfield campus was established in 2016 in partnership with CoxHealth and Mercy Springfield Communities health systems.

The National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) conducts an annual match process designed to optimize the choices of medical students and residency program directors. Students rank their residency program choices in order of preference, and program directors rank students. The NRMP uses a computerized mathematical algorithm to place applicants into their most preferred program that also prefers them. In the third week of March, results of the matches are announced.

In the 2026 Main Residency Match, more than 53,000 applicants competed for approximately 44,000 residency positions in more than 6,800 residency training programs.
