Current Child-Focused Research - Actively Recruiting

Better Rest for Children with Autism (RECHArge)

Clinicaltrials.gov (Identifier: NCT04545606)
Funded by Department of Defense (W81XWH-20-1-0399, PI Christina McCrae)

The overall objective of this study is to test this a sleep intervention for 180 children with ASD. Children and their parent(s) will undergo four treatment sessions and will be assigned a sleep therapist who will work with each family on an individual basis. All in-person study visits take place at the Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment Disorders, where free parking and compensation is provided. This project is a collaboration between the Mizzou Sleep Research Lab and the Thompson Center.

Completed Child-Focused Research

Pediatric Obesity and Pediatric Sleep (POPS)

Clinicaltrials.gov (Identifier: NCT02232217)
Funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (R21HL121432, PI Christina McCrae & David Janicke)

POPS is a completed randomized clinical trial of a novel family-based behavioral sleep intervention that was specifically designed to target behavioral sleep problems in overweight and obese children. This study ran at the University of Florida, where children and their parent(s) were randomly assigned to one of two behavioral sleep treatments. In both treatments, children completed eight treatment sessions with a sleep therapist who worked with each family on an individual basis. This project was a collaborative effort between Dr. McCrae (University of Missouri) and Dr. Janicke (University of Florida).

Better Rest for Children with Autism (RECHArge) – Pilot Study

Clinicaltrials.gov (Identifier: NCT02755051)
Funded by the University of Missouri Research Board (PI Christina McCrae & Micah Mazurek)

RECHArge is a completed clinical trial of a novel family-based behavioral sleep intervention that was designed to target behavioral sleep problems in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The overall objective of this study was to test a newly developed sleep intervention in 30 children with ASD. Children and their parent(s) received eight treatment sessions and were a sleep therapist who worked with each family on an individual basis. This project was a collaboration between the Mizzou Sleep Research Lab and the Thompson Center.

Better Rest for Children with Autism – Remote (RECHArge-Remote)

Funded by the University of Missouri Research Board (PI Christina McCrae & Micah Mazurek)

RECHArge-Remote is a completed clinical trial that was a spin-off of RECHArge. This trial involved a shortened treatment protocol (four remote sessions as opposed to the eight in-person sessions in the pilot RECHArge trial). Similar to the pilot trial, RECHArge-remote was a clinical trial of a novel family-based behavioral sleep intervention that was designed to target behavioral sleep problems in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The overall objective of spin-off study was to test a briefer, remotely delivered sleep intervention in 15 children with ASD. Children and their parent(s) received four remotely delivered (videoconferencing) treatment sessions. A trained sleep therapist worked with each family on an individual basis. This project was a collaboration between the Mizzou Sleep Research Lab and the Thompson Center for Autism.
