University of Missouri School of Medicine faculty and administration recently gathered at the Patient-Centered Care Learning Center for the medical school’s annual Education Day. This year’s edition was hosted by the School of Medicine Curriculum Committee and the medical school’s Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honor Medical Society chapter.
The event featured two keynote addresses, emphasizing the evolution of medical school curriculum. Nadia Ismail, MD, MPH, MEd, and Nancy P. Moreno, PhD, presented on behalf of the Baylor College of Medicine and Thomas De Fer, MD, FACP, represented Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine.
Following an interactive workshop, Joel Shenker, MD, PhD, associate dean for curriculum, moderated a panel discussion with the event’s keynote speakers, allowing Mizzou School of Medicine faculty and staff to gain further insights into curriculum development.
Richard J. Barohn, MD, executive vice chancellor for health affairs and Hugh E. and Sarah D. Stephenson dean of the School of Medicine, closed the event by emphasizing the medical school’s new MOmentum curriculum initiative.
The goal of this curriculum work is to ensure Mizzou medical students graduate with the most cutting-edge skills, knowledge and adaptability needed to thrive in an increasingly complex health care environment and deliver patient-centered care with excellence.
“With MOmentum, we’re charting a bold path forward in medical education, ensuring that every one of our students has the tools needed to reach their full potential,” said Barohn. “We’ll evaluate our clinical teaching experiences, take advantage of partnerships across the Mizzou and local community and much more. This new MOmentum curriculum will continue to attract the best students to Mizzou and position us as leaders in medical education.”
